Changing Lives, Step-By-Step
PROTERTECH began operating with an audacious mission: to improve the lives of thousands of people with disabilities all over the world. Ever since it was founded in 2012, the company has worked on more than 25 innovative rehab technology development and commercialization projects.
From the very beginning: finding out there’s always a way to get better results
ProterTech was founded by entrepreneur María Paz Bureo, a physical and occupational therapist who specializes in motor skill recovery in patients with movement disorders. María Paz personally knows what it means to have a disability as she suffered from a brain injury as a result of a childhood accident which caused lasting consequences she’s still fighting to overcome.
It was through her extensive experience as a physical therapist, both in homecare as well as out-patient and hospital care, that María Paz was able to see how it’s possible to exponentially optimize recovery in patients with movement disorders using advanced technology and tools, thereby reducing the length of the rehabilitation process and increasing the skills regained.
She then began to collaborate with research groups, spin offs and tech companies in several countries to develop technologies and methods. This collaborative work has led to solutions with a significant impact such as prism glasses to treat phantom limb syndrome in amputee patients (the PRISMGLASSES project in collaboration with the NHS, United Kingdom) and bilateral rehab equipment for upper limb recovery in hemiplegic patients (the BATRAC project in collaboration with the University of Maryland, USA).
Working with the Best
Ever since it was founded, PROTERTECH has been collaborating with key tech industry stakeholders in the field of rehab and disabilities, making it so that technological developments aimed at improving quality of life for people with disabilities can reach healthcare professionals, and, therefore, end users.
